Four players are gathered around a table. Illuminated by waning candlelight: books, a lute, a dagger, wine in a chalice, gold and silver coins, and scattered between them the twenty-two triomphes of the tarot, as it was printed in Paris around 1620.
The contemporaries Nicolas Vallet, Michelagnolo Galilei, Hieronymus Kapsperger and John Dowland likely never met in person, though their respective fates and careers are found reflected in the fatalistic program of these cards – a sort of alphabet for humanist symbolism, with a piece of music assigned to each motive. A musical dimension in between these four Europe-spanning biographies emerges.
Tarot de Paris, the CD and 256-page book, are available to order here.
